Who Is In Team With a Pupose? - Now up to 7 members!

I'm reposting this with the slight change that Brian is now signed up! Yay!

Currently there are 6 members of Team With A Purpose, with a couple people on the fence. Here's a rundown of who is on the team.

Pete - Team Captain

Andy

Brian

Derek

Laveta

Nicole

William

There are some people that have, at one time or another, expressed some interest in the ride and joining Team With A Purpose but haven't made that final committment and registered and joined the team. Maybe they need some convincing? If you know any of them than give them a "gentle" push to sign up for the ride and become a TWAPper.

Thank You!

TWAP wants to thank everyone for coming to Max's.

We had a great time and a good turnout. Check out our pics on Flickr. We handed out lots of info about the TWAP, Ride For The Feast and Moveable Feast. We talked to several people about Moveable Feast and why we were there. There was a lot of interest and hopefully we may have drummed up more donors, volunteers and riders!

UNOFFICIALLY we were told by Maxs that we raised approximately $1100. I'll post an exact amount when I find out!

THANK YOU!

How I got involved with Ride For The Feast

I first heard of Moveable Feast when I was working for HERO. For those that don't know HERO, it was a non-profit organization that provided HIV/AIDS-related services. It was the largest recipient of Ryan White funds in Maryland. They did a lot of good work but there were several internal issues that led to it's eventually closure in late 2008. Moveable Feast prepared and delivered meals to many of the clients of HERO. Some received home deliveries and many received hot meals for dinner at HERO before it would close for the day.

HERO also ran the Baltimore AIDSWalk in which I participated. While still working there many things came to light that made me less inclined to take part in the AIDWalk and I searched for something I could do that would help this same community and involve some form of outdoor activity. I found the Ride For The Feast and Moveable Feast. I was impressed with the work that I had seen Moveable Feast doing while working at HERO and as I looked up more information I became more interested in them.

I've done the ride now for 5 years and am looking forward to my 6th ride. I continue to be impressed with the work done by Moveable Feast and by the volunteers they attract. I've become much more involved with the Ride and have participated in the planning and am trying to help with the rider recruitment. Last year I started a team with some of my friends who were also, unfortunately, some of my donors! The ride has been great fun and really draws a fantastic and diverse group of people. It's something I look forward to every spring.

Getting back in the saddle is always a challenge but I feel great by the time everything is done. I want to encourage everyone to keep involved and have some fun along the way. Moveable Feast does a great job of supporting the riders. They also provide great meals along the way. As I heard a rider say, "This is the only century ride where I think I GAINED weight!" Who can resist with that kind of praise?

Keep riding, keep fundraising, keep supporting, keep helping and keep having fun!

Donated Hand Crafted Puzzle for Movable Feast Raffle

A Custom, Hand-Crafted, 14" x 14" 127 Piece Puzzle has been lovingly created by a Cancer Survivor to support Movable Feast. Raffle tickets are being sold for $5 each by Team With A Purpose. Please contact William or Laveta to purchase tickets.

The artist has also agreed to donate a portion of all sales from now until the Ride for the Feast. Please visit her website to see the other offerings http://www.cogitators4you.com/

A Letter from the Artist to the Riders:

Dear Riders for the Feast, March 23, 2009

I want you to know that I appreciate what you do and the sacrifices you make to do it. I am a cancer survivor – 7 years now – and though I was fortunate enough to have loving family and friends to help me when I needed it the most, not everyone is that lucky. Thank you for helping the Moveable Feast to make a difference.

I am pleased to make a small contribution by donating one of my puzzles to be auctioned off. I hope it brings in a million dollars! I thought long and hard about what to create that might convey a deeper meaning while also injecting a note of humor. This is what I came up with. There are 127 pieces of fun within the frame. I have titled it “The Offering”. These puzzles generally sell for $200, but I hope you are able to raise much more than that. I will also donate 10% of any puzzles that are purchased from my website before the ride. Just mention “Moveable Feast” and I will donate 10% of the purchase price in the name of the buyer.

Let me tell you a little bit about what goes into each puzzle. From start to finish they take between 20 and 30 hours. They are hand painted. I use a scroll saw to cut the puzzle pieces. Each piece is independently hand sanded to ensure smooth edges. When the sanding is done, the puzzle is painted with several coats of a clear acrylic to increase durability. My husband, David, builds individual, unique frames for them. Together, we create “functional” art.

I wish all of you good weather, good health and safe journeys. Thank you again for going the extra miles (140 of them!).

What Is All This?

Some of you are probably wondering, "What is Team With A Purpose, Ride for the Feast and Moveable Feast?"

Moveable Feast is nonprofit that provides people with HIV/AIDS and breast cancer, and their familes, with a variety of services.
